Your Nervous System Is a Performance System

For most of my career, stress was something I worked around rather than something I measured. You had a hard case, a long day, a difficult month, and you pushed through. The idea that your nervous system was a trainable system, with its own metrics and its own recovery requirements, would have struck me as soft.

I've changed my mind on that, and the reason is fairly concrete: high chronic stress measurably blunts the adaptations you're training for. You can do the strength work and still not get the result if your recovery physiology never comes back to baseline.

What is actually being measured

The most useful practical marker here is heart rate variability, or HRV: the small beat-to-beat variation in the interval between heartbeats. Counterintuitively, more variation is generally better. It reflects a nervous system that is responsive, able to shift between activation and recovery rather than being stuck in one gear.

A related and even simpler marker is how fast your heart rate comes down after hard effort. Someone whose heart rate drops sharply in the first minute after a hard set is showing you something real about their autonomic function, no device required.

Why this is a performance issue, not just a wellness one

Chronic sympathetic activation, the state most high performers live in by default, comes with sustained cortisol elevation. Sustained cortisol elevation interferes with sleep quality, and impaired sleep interferes with recovery from training. That chain is the whole argument. It doesn't require any belief about the mystical properties of breathwork.

Put concretely: if you are training hard, eating well, and still not recovering, the constraint may not be in your training or your nutrition. It may be that your nervous system never actually leaves the accelerator.

The most telling number in the gym isn't what you lifted. It's how fast your heart rate came back down afterward.

What actually moves it

The interventions with the most support are unglamorous. Consistent sleep timing. Slow nasal breathing with an extended exhale, which directly stimulates the vagus nerve. Time outdoors, particularly morning light exposure, which anchors circadian rhythm. Deliberate low-intensity movement. And, harder for most driven people, actual scheduled downtime that isn't secretly productive.

There's growing interest in sauna and cold exposure here too. The evidence for heat exposure and cardiovascular outcomes is more developed than the evidence for cold, and I'd treat cold plunging as promising but not settled. Neither is a substitute for sleeping enough.

Using the data without being ruled by it

If you track HRV, track the trend rather than the day. Single-day readings are noisy and heavily influenced by alcohol, illness, late meals, and measurement conditions. A seven-day rolling average tells you something. Tuesday's number tells you almost nothing.

Some people use HRV to decide training intensity day to day. That can work, though it can also become another source of anxiety, which rather defeats the purpose. If checking the number makes your morning worse, the intervention is costing more than it returns.

The honest summary

Nervous system regulation went from a fringe wellness topic to something I take seriously because the mechanism is legible and the downstream effects are measurable. It isn't a replacement for training, nutrition, or sleep. It's the thing that determines whether those three actually convert into results.
