For a long time the accepted wisdom in strength circles was that cardio compromised your gains. Concurrent training was thought to create an interference effect where the aerobic adaptations blunted the strength ones. A lot of people used that as permission to skip cardio entirely.
The interference effect is real but far smaller and more conditional than the folklore suggested. It shows up mainly at very high volumes of aerobic work performed close in time to lifting. For nearly everyone not training as a competitive endurance athlete, it's not the binding constraint.
Why you actually need both
These two modalities protect different things, and the things they protect are not interchangeable.
Resistance training preserves muscle mass, bone density, and the ability to produce force. That's what keeps you functionally independent, what protects against falls, and what maintains glucose disposal capacity as you age.
Aerobic training builds cardiovascular capacity and mitochondrial density, and it's what drives VO2 max, one of the more powerful predictors of all-cause mortality available. You cannot get that adaptation from lifting, and you cannot get muscle and bone from cycling.
Optimizing one and neglecting the other leaves a structural gap. This is the same failure mode I saw constantly in healthcare organizations: excellence in one department doesn't compensate for an absent one.
The goal isn't to be a master of one. It's to be durable enough to lift the suitcase, climb the mountain, and recover from both.
A structure that works for most people
Three to four resistance sessions per week covering the major movement patterns: a squat pattern, a hinge, an upper body push, an upper body pull, and some loaded carrying. Progressive overload over months, meaning the load or volume actually increases over time rather than staying comfortable.
Alongside that, roughly 150 to 200 minutes weekly of low-intensity aerobic work, the conversational pace often called zone 2, plus one weekly session of genuinely hard intervals to push the top end.
That's a real time commitment, around five to seven hours weekly. It's also, for most people, the highest-return use of that time available anywhere in a longevity plan.
Managing the actual interference
If you want to minimize what interference exists, the practical rules are simple. Separate hard lifting and hard intervals by several hours, or put them on different days. Don't do your hardest aerobic session immediately before your heaviest lifting session. Keep the bulk of the aerobic work genuinely easy, which most people fail at because easy feels unproductive.
The most common mistake I see isn't doing too much cardio. It's doing all cardio at a moderate intensity that's too hard to build a proper aerobic base and too easy to drive top-end adaptation. That middle zone is where a lot of effort goes to die.
The point
The hybrid model isn't a compromise between two goals. It's the recognition that healthspan requires both a strong structural system and a capable cardiovascular one, and that the training required for each is complementary rather than competing.
